Waheed Salem

Waheed Salem, whose real name was Muhammad Salem al-Darwali, was a Libyan singer and composer born in Benghazi in 1952 and a sociology graduate of the University of Benghazi. He began performing in the 1960s with the University of Benghazi singing troupe while also playing football for al-Tahaddi club, then joined the radio as a singer, introducing an eastern-flavoured style shaped by his admiration for Abdel Halim Hafez. His career proper began in 1971 with his first work, "Khadaouna", recorded in Cairo with the Egyptian ensemble Firqat al-Masa; his output passed three hundred patriotic and romantic songs, he headed the music department at Libyan Radio for more than twenty five years, and he acted in the television series "Al-Washma" and "Rihla Maa al-Ayyam". He died in Benghazi in June 2024 after a stroke.

وحيد سالم، واسمه الحقيقي محمد سالم الدرولي، مطرب وملحن ليبي من مواليد مدينة بنغازي عام 1952، وتحصل على ليسانس في علم الاجتماع من جامعة بنغازي. بدأ نشاطه الفني في الستينيات مع فرقة جامعة بنغازي الغنائية إلى جانب لعبه كرة القدم في نادي التحدي، ثم التحق بالإذاعة مطرباً وقدم لوناً ذا طابع شرقي متأثراً بمدرسة عبد الحليم حافظ في الأداء. انطلقت مسيرته الفنية الحقيقية عام 1971 بأول عمل له مع فرقة الماسة المصرية في القاهرة بأغنية "خدعونا"، وتجاوز إنتاجه ثلاثمئة عمل غنائي وطني وعاطفي، كما ترأس القسم الموسيقي بالإذاعة الليبية لأكثر من خمسة وعشرين عاماً وشارك في التمثيل في مسلسلي "الوشمة" و"رحلة مع الأيام". توفي في بنغازي في يونيو 2024 إثر جلطة دماغية.
